The history of the State Literary and Memorial Museum Complex of Gabdulla Tukay
The museum complex documents and represents the life and work of a native of the village of Koshlauch, the great Tatar poet Gabdulla Tukay (1886-1913).

Currently, the complex includes: the House-Museum of the Tukaev family (Koshlauch village), the museum of Gabdulla Tukay, the House of Tukay's adoptive father Sagdi Salikhov, the House of Akhmatkhan Bai (Novy Kyrlay village).

In 1956, a bronze bust of the poet was installed in the village of Koshlauch (sculptors: S.S.Akhun, L.E.Kerbel, L.M.Pisarevsky, headed by I.A. Novoselov). The estate of Mullah M.M.Tukayev, where the poet was born, was reconstructed for the museum (an object of cultural heritage of regional significance by decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Tatarstan No. 318 dated 04.06.2001). In 1996, a one-story mullah house was recreated. Since 2016, here are presented: the typological interior of a Tatar house, the life of peasants of the 2nd half of the 19th century. The exposition in the mullah's house (the authors are employees of the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan) was opened on 24.05.1996. – for the 110th anniversary of the birth of Tukay, updated in 2011. (the authors are employees of the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan). The main theme of the 1st hall is the world of Tukay's childhood (his pedigree, documents about parents and relatives, the history of the village, local representatives of the Muslim clergy; photographs) and his works for children (books, illustrations). In the 2nd hall there is a reconstruction of the interior of the parents' house using memorial and typological objects (a stove; household items collected in nearby villages of Arsky and Atninsky districts; national costumes; plates and a teapot belonging to the poet's mother). The 3rd hall is for events.

In 2018, at the expense of philanthropist L.N.Shafiullin, a spring "Mullah chishmese" was built near the museum on the left bank of the Krasnaya River (in the middle of the 19th century it was ennobled by Tukay's grandfather Mukhammetgalim).

In the same 1956, in parallel with the village of Koshlauch, an identical bronze bust of the poet was installed in the courtyard of the Novokyrla secondary school named after Gabdulla Tukay (sculptors: S.S.Akhun, L.E.Kerbel, L.M.Pisarevsky, headed by I.A.Novoselov).

In 1960, on the initiative of primary school teacher H.H.Khabrieva, Chairman of the Novokyrla village Council V.V.Vafina and librarian A.N.Shakirova, the first exposition dedicated to Tukay was opened in the premises of the building built for the village library. In 1971, the Gabdulla Tukay Museum, a branch of the Gorky Museum in Kazan, was established on its basis.

In 1976, it was transformed into the Literary and Memorial Museum of Gabdulla Tukay - a branch of the State Museum of the Tatar ASSR (since 2001, the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan – NM RT).

By Order of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Tatarstan No. 518-r dated 24.4.2006, it was reorganized into the State Literary and Memorial Museum Complex of Gabdulla Tukay with the inclusion of the House-Museum of the Tukaev family (Koshlauch village), the Museum of Gabdulla Tukay, the House of Tukay's adoptive father Sagdi Salikhov, the House of Akhmatkhan Bai (Novy Kyrlay village).

The funds of the museum complex contain 2,218 items of museum value: books (including lifetime editions of Tukay's works), newspapers, magazines; copies of letters from Tukay (to his sister G.M.Zabirova, F.Z.Amirkhan); memorials (of the poet's friend H.M.Yamashev; gifts of Tukay Zabirova – kalfak, beads, prayer mat, the box); sculptures by B.I.Urmanche, majolica "Byltyr and Shurale" (sculptor G.A.Zyablitsev), paintings by Tatar artists – winners of the Gabdulla Tukay State Prize of the Republic of Tatarstan – V.I.Kudelkin, S.O.Lyvin, H.A.Yakupov, A.A.Abzgildin, G.L.Eidinov, V.A.Arshinov, M.I.Kuznetsov, I.K.Kolmogortseva), etc.; items of clothing and everyday life of Kazan Tatars; gifts of philanthropist L.N.Shafiullin (tugra with the name of Tukay and his poems, chess with ceramic figures – the heroes of Tukay's works, over 50 books with the works of the poet and about him), etc.


The Gabdulla Tukay Museum is located in a 2-storey wooden building built for the 90th anniversary of Tukay (1976-1979; architect B.I.Urmanche; included in the List of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Tatarstan dated 01.01.2002 as a newly identified object of cultural value). The exhibition was opened on 25.04.1979 (authors: D.B.Bagautdinova, I.Z.Minkhadzheva, L.E.Pokhvalinskaya; artist A.P.Mukhin).

In 2006, a re–exposition was held (the authors are employees of the NM RT), the opening was attended by the President of the Republic of Tatarstan M.Sh.Shaimiev. On the 1st floor there are 4 halls: "The poet's childhood years" (copies of Tukay's birth certificates and his father's death; photographs, books, a madrasa student's wicker briefcase, textbooks, clothing and household items); "Ural period" [19th century printing press; books: 6th volume of the complete collection the works of A.S. Pushkin – "The History of the Pugachev rebellion" (1871); the 1st volume of the complete works of M.Y.Lermontov – "Poems" (1891); lifetime edition of the magazine "New Reading" (1910); newspaper "Thought", magazine "New Century"; photos]; "Kazan period" (conditional interior of room No. 40, where Tukay lived and furniture from the suite, lifetime editions of Tukay's poem "Shurale", periodicals with which Tukay collaborated; Yamashev's personal belongings – a bed, a travel basket); in In the assembly hall there is a section about the winners of the Gabdulla Tukay State Prize of the Republic of Tatarstan. On the 2nd floor there are paintings dedicated to Tukay in the hall, a hall with an exposition of "The Connecting thread of Times" (photographs of Tukay's contemporaries, the first Novokyrla secondary school, a museum, anniversary events) and a hall with an exhibition "In the world of tales of Gabdulla Tukay" (2016-2019 and from 2021; authors: the Saleev family); presented beadwork (portrait of Tukay, paintings), compositions based on the poet's works of dolls in national clothes, embroidered with beads, and a fabulous forest of beads.

In the park area of the museum on the banks of the Since 1976, Urmanche's works have been located – a monument to Tukay (bronze) and a sculptural composition "Dancing Shurales" (wood), since 2016 – sculptures of the heroes of the poet's works (sculptor F.R.Valiullin).

In June 1996 (110th anniversary of the classic), the first President of the Russian Federation B.N.Yeltsin visited the Gabdulla Tukay Museum, in 2021 (135th anniversary) – the President of the Republic of Tatarstan R.N.Minnikhanov.


The house of Sagdi Salikhov (an object of cultural heritage of regional significance by decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Tatarstan No. 301 dated 04/19/1996), Tukay's adoptive father, includes: a wooden house restored in 1976, in which Tukay lived in 1892-1895; outbuildings – a barn, a glacier, a barn, a crane well, a fence, a gate; planted by Tukay in 1893 pine tree. In 1976, the typological interior was recreated in the house, in 1986 the typological interior was updated and the life of Tatar peasants of the late 19th – early 20th centuries was shown. (oven, household utensils, national clothes); in the exhibition – a frying pan belonging to Salikhov. On the territory of the estate in 2016, a literary and sculptural park, the Apusha Well, created on the initiative of L.N.Shafigullin (that was the poet's name in childhood), was opened.


Akhmatkhan Bai's house is a 2-storey wooden house of the imam of the mosque in the village of Ashit. Built in 1893, it was bought and transported from the village of Ashit to New Kirlay in 1918 by a wealthy peasant Akhmatkhan Mukhametzyanov, renovated after being transferred to the museum complex in 2011 and in 2017. Its exposition (opened in 2012; re–exposition – in 2017; authors - museum staff, head – D.Z.Abdullin) presents the life of wealthy peasants of the late 19th – early 20th centuries. (household items, agricultural implements, reconstruction of a loom, furniture, harmonium, national Tatar costume, bearskin coat, etc.).


House-Museum of the Tukaev family, Koshlauch village, Republic of Tatarstan. It is dedicated to the native of the village, the poet Gabdulla Tukay, his father – the decree mullah (since 1864 imam-khatib) Mukhamedgarif (1843-1886) and his mother Bibimamduda.

For the museum, the estate of Mullah M.M. Tukayev was reconstructed, where the poet was born on 26.4.1886 (an object of cultural heritage of regional significance by decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Tatarstan No. 318 of 4.6.2001): in 1976, a 1-storey house with an entrance hall (29.1 sq. m.) was restored, in 2016, its capital repairs were carried out; in 2011, a barn-cage and bathhouse. In 1996, the 1-storey mullah house was recreated (143.1 sq. m. m); in 2016 it was renovated, the facade was changed. In 2018, at the expense of philanthropist L.N. Shafiullin, a spring "Mullah chishmese" was built near the museum on the left bank of the Krasnaya River (in the middle of the 19th century it was ennobled by Tukay's grandfather Mukhammetgalim).

Uses the funds of the museum complex, where the following are stored: personal belongings of the poet's mother, photographs and books of Tukay; archive of a native of the village – writer A.S. Galiev, paintings and graphics, objects of Tatar life, etc.

The first exposition in the house with an entrance hall (1976-86) was created for the 90th anniversary of the birth of Tukay, for the 100th anniversary in 1986, a re-exposition was carried out (with the participation of the creative group of the State Union. museum of the Tatar ASSR); since 2016, here are presented: typological interior of a Tatar house, the life of peasants of the 2nd half of the 19th century.

In the 2nd hall – reconstruction of the interior of the parent's house using memorial and typological objects (oven; household items collected in the nearby villages of Arsky and Atninsky districts; national costumes; 3 plates and a teapot, according to legend, belonged to the poet's mother). The 3rd hall is for events.

The State Literary and Memorial Museum Complex of Gabdulla Tukay is visited by over 30,000 people a year, about 300 excursions are held. Meetings with writers, winners of the State Prize of the Republic of Tatarstan named after G. Tukay, exhibitions, lectures, museum lessons, conferences are held; Tukay's birthdays are celebrated. It is included in the literary tourist route – the end point of the hiking trail "The Way of Tukay" ("Tukay Yuli", since 2019).
